Michael Gish, son of A. Samuel and Grace Gish, is the founder of Gish’s Furniture and Amish Heirlooms. He returned to Pennsylvania from Ohio to open a furniture store in Camp Hill. While in Ohio, Michael worked for Miller’s Furniture in Plain City and learned a great deal about the Amish furniture industry. Michael learned about how Amish furniture is built and how many overseas furniture manufacturers cut corners to keep their costs down, but not the Ohio Amish; these master craftsmen are meticulous in their trade. Michael was also president of Miller-Gish Finishing in Plain City, which specialized in finishing Amish-made furniture with a catalyzed conversion varnish. According to Michael, this finish is the finest in the furniture industry, and he would offer his customers nothing less. Soon after returning to Pennsylvania, Michael married Teresa who is from Ohio and during that same week they opened the new store. Michael thought that the people in this area would want to buy the furniture built by the people he had come to know and trust. Gish’s carries a wide range of furniture, from kitchen tables, hutches, office desks and curios to bedroom furniture and baby cribs. All the furniture is primarily available in solid oak or cherry wood and in 15 different stain colors. The furniture is also finished in the catalyzed conversion varnish of which Michael is so confident. Michael boasts, “You can have solid wood, handcrafted furniture, custom made to match your home’s décor for what many stores charge for veneers and cheap substitutes.” Quality is critical at Gish’s. Most furniture is made to order, and Michael recommends allowing two to four months from order to delivery. “Good things take time,” he said. “This is furniture built to last a lifetime.” Gish’s store at 3424 Simpson Ferry Road opened in December of 2003 and the 2nd location at 728 Loucks Road (Rt. 30), York opened in April 2006. The third store at 2191 Lincoln Hwy. East (Rt.30), Lancaster was opened in January 2008. It is a family business with Michael’s wife, mother, father, and brother all contributing to the success of the business. Michael and Teresa have two sons, Matthew (Jan. '07) and Ezekiel (March '10). Gish’s Furniture invites you to look to them for your next family heirloom, for these are truly the antiques of tomorrow. |
