Traditional living rooms have stood the test of time for a reason. Rooted in classic design principles, these spaces combine comfort, craftsmanship, and timeless furnishings to create a space that families can enjoy for generations. At Gish's Furniture, we believe the foundation of every beautiful living room starts with solid hardwood furniture handcrafted by Amish artisans. Here's how to create a living space that will remain beautiful and functional for years to come:

Start with Quality Hardwood Furniture

One hallmark of good design is furniture that feels substantial, refined, and built to last. Unlike mass-produced pieces made from particleboard or veneers, solid hardwood furniture offers the durability and craftsmanship that traditional interiors are known for.

When selecting furniture for your living room, look for pieces crafted from premium hardwoods such as Oak, Cherry, Maple, Walnut, or Hickory. These species provide rich grain patterns and timeless character that only improves with age, and choosing furniture from the same collection or wood species creates an intentional and coordinated look.

A well-designed living room also includes occasional tables and other intentionally placed pieces. When we say “Occasional Tables,” we mean coffee tables, end tables, accent tables for drinks, lamps, or decorative accessories. In larger spaces, you might also see console tables, curio cabinets, and bookcases.

Traditional design emphasizes symmetry and balance. Rather than arranging furniture randomly, create a layout that feels organized and intentional.

Consider the following layouts, depending on your space:

  • Centering seating around a fireplace, entertainment center, or large window

  • Placing matching end tables on either side of a sofa

  • Arranging chairs opposite the sofa to encourage conversation

Layer in Classic Upholstery

Traditional living rooms prioritize comfort as much as style. Choose upholstered furniture with classic silhouettes such as rolled-arm sofas, wingback chairs, tufted ottomans, or even club chairs. You can also add visual interest with patterned throw pillows that feature traditional motifs like florals, stripes, plaids, or damask patterns.

Once your core furniture is in place, incorporating carefully selected accessories easily enhances the room's timeless character. We like framed artwork, antique-inspired mirrors, table lamps, and especially family heirlooms, as traditional design values meaningful décor rather than excessive decoration. The ultimate goal is for every piece to contribute to the story of the room.

Anchor the Space with a Classic Area Rug

A quality area rug helps define the seating area and adds warmth underfoot. We love the rich texture of wool rugs, but synthetic materials are more stain-resistant - whatever works best for your lifestyle!

Traditional styles that we recommend to our clients:

The rug should be large enough for the front legs of your seating pieces to rest comfortably on its surface, helping unify the furniture arrangement. And we ALWAYS recommend a rug pad to prevent rugs from slipping, and to add a little extra cushion to increase the life of the rug.

A traditional living room is more than flaunting style—it's an investment in comfort, quality, and craftsmanship. By combining balanced layouts, classic décor, and solid hardwood furniture, you can create a space that feels inviting and remains beautiful for decades.
